MMA fighter shaves head in attempt to make weight - but is still too heavy

MMA fighter Joilton Lutterbach was unable to make weight for his interim world title fight in Brave CF this weekend, despite shaving his head at the last moment.

The 46-fight veteran is set to face Mihail Kotruta at Brave CF 68 this weekend in the Maritim Hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany, with the super-lightweight interim belt on the line. However, he came in 0.22lb over the limit after a gruelling weight cut and won't be able to clinch the belt if he wins the fight. Kotruta still can become interim champion and he gets 20 per cent of his rival's purse.

Brazilian Lutterbach looked almost unrecognisable on the scales after shaving off all his hair in order to try and shed the last piece of weight necessary. But he was unable to get down to the 165lb limit for a super-lightweight fight, which is a rare division that not many promotions recognise.

And that wasn't the only drama at the weigh-ins, with the co-main event also falling into disarray between Ismail Naurdiev and Vadim Kutsyi. The Austrian initially hit the scales overweight for the super-welterweight bout, but with a minute to go before the deadline, he weighed in again and - much to the promotion's joy - saved his fight with Kutsyi.

There was another weight miss when unbeaten German Max Holzer came in a fraction over the bantamweight limit for the opening fight of the night against Andrey Tyshchenko, but the fight survives on the card. Two other bouts, Florim Zendeli versus Tamirlan Dadaev and Maurice Adorf vversus Anastasios Chatzigorgiadis, were scrapped altogether.

Veteran fighter Lutterbach has competed around the world in all sorts of different disciplines, including high level kickboxing and Muay Thai. He competed in the 2021 PFL season, losing both of his fights, and also took part in The Ultimate Fighter Brazil's third season in 2014.

Notable wins on Lutterbach's record include a stunning victory in Cage Warriors over former BAMMA champion Alex Lohore, as well as two victories over Mohamed Grabinski. He has fought as heavy as middleweight in the past, once taking on now-UFC star Dricus Du Plessis, who defeated Darren Till at UFC 282 last weekend to land himself in the rankings at 185lb in MMA's top promotion.
