SEATTLE - The Atlanta Braves returned to winning ways on June 13 with a 6-3 road win against the Baltimore Orioles. The victory helped Atlanta avoid the sweep and snap five-game losing streak, their longest this season.
Despite their offensive struggles since Ronald Acuña Jr. went down with an ACL injury, the Braves scored six runs for the first time since June 4, snapping a seven-game streak scoring less than six.
The arm of right-handed pitcher Reynaldo López certainly helped end the negative squid. López started his 12th game of the season and gave the Braves six scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.69, the lowest in all the Majors.
Two early runs in the first inning put the Braves ahead courtesy of Marcell Ozuna and Ozzie Albies doubles. With an early lead, López used his powerful arm to keep the Orioles at bay for six innings.
López earned his fourth win of the season in 12 starts so far. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 11 of those starts while the only time he allowed more than two runs was against the Seattle Mariners on April 30 (3 ER).
Besides lowering his ERA to 1.69 on the season, López also tied his season-high in strike outs with eight. He allowed two hits and a walk out of his 91 total pitches.
"To get a win against a team like this that has been hot is definitely huge," López said through an interpreter. "I think it starts to give the sense that you can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You're hoping it sort of sparks some resemblance of the team we were last year, where we were attacking teams in the first inning."
After avoiding a sweep against the red-hot Orioles, the Braves will travel back home for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, putting an end to their nine-game road trip that yielded three wins and six losses.
