SEATTLE - It's been a solid start to the season for Venezuelan pitcher Ranger Suárez. On Thursday, he earned his second win of the 2024 season after a fantastic outing against the Pittsburg Pirates, helping his Philadelphia Phillies take the first game of the series 5-1.
The lefty pitched six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while registering eight strike outs. The Venezuelan threw 97 pitches against the Pirates -24 sinkers, 23 four-seam fastballs, 21 curveballs, 15 cutters and 14 changeups- and landed 62 of his pitches in the strike zone.
The 28-year-old has seen much more composed in his three outings this year, as he is trying to bounce back from a not-so-great 2023 season that saw him miss the first six weeks due to a strained elbow.
So far this year, Suárez has only allowed five runs in 17 innings pitched, bringing his ERA to 2.65 in the year.
Suárez needed a strong outing against the Pirates, as his last game of the 2023 regular season left him with a sour taste. He allowed nine hits and six runs last time out against the Pirates in just four innings. He rectified it last night, signing off his first no-run start since June of last year.
