SEATTLE - A dominant display to close out a dominant month. Right-handed pitcher Luis Gil struck out nine batters and allowed just one run in the New York Yankees' 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Dominican threw for a career-high eight innings and, out of his 95 pitches, he only allowed two hits, including a solo-home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Yankees closed out the game and gave Gil its sixth win of the month in just as many starts.

During that span, Gil allowed just three runs in 38 ²/₃ innings, good for a 0.70 ERA, the best among pitchers with at least 35 IP in the month of May. He also topped the charts as the pitcher with the fewest runs allowed (3) and ranked second in the Majors in terms of strikeouts (44), just one behind the Braves' Chris Sale (45).

"Am I fully 100 percent surprised? I'm not," Gil said through an interpreter. "The reason why is that it took a lot of dedication and a lot of work to get here. That's something I really wanted to do, to put myself in the best position possible coming here. When you're able to command pitches out there, really good things happen."

Gil's eight-inning masterclass marked the Yankees' 16th straight start of five innings or more and two or fewer runs allowed, the longest by any MLB team since at least 1893 according to Elias Sports Bureau.
