Mixed Reactions To Trump's Comments On Taiwan Defense Spending

Donald Trump Former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's rally in Sioux City

Former President Trump's recent comments regarding Taiwan's defense spending have sparked mixed reactions. Trump suggested that Taiwan should pay the U.S. for defense, citing the country's significant role in the chip business. However, some in Taiwan argue that the country has been a reliable partner, having purchased major weaponry systems from the U.S. at market prices for decades.

Following Trump's remarks, Taiwan's chipmaker TSMC saw a drop in share price, but the company remains committed to its expansion plans in various countries. Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai expressed gratitude for U.S. support and emphasized Taiwan's commitment to shouldering its international responsibilities.

While some in Taiwan agree with Trump's stance on defense spending, others believe that Taiwan already contributes significantly to its defense. The country has increased its defense budget in recent years but still falls short of the 3% GDP threshold demanded by Trump.

Critics of Trump's comments point to the $19 billion backlog of American weapons that Taiwan has already purchased but not yet received. Despite differing opinions on defense spending, there is a consensus in Taiwan regarding the threat posed by China.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized the need for self-reliance in defense and outlined plans to modernize the military and increase spending. With the possibility of Trump returning to office in 2025, there is anticipation of a pro-Taiwan administration that recognizes the challenges posed by Beijing.
