Mixed feelings over plans for new Lidl and homes on derelict Bestwood site 'surrounded by supermarkets'

Plans to create dozens of new homes on a derelict site were met with excitement by a Nottingham community - but some are still on the fence with the proposal of a new supermarket being built in the neighbourhood. It comes as a planning application has been submitted to build 62 new homes on a vacant site in Bestwood.

The proposals have been submitted on September 21. A new Lidl and dozens of homes could be built on the 1.6 hectares former site of Chronos Richardson Ltd in Belconnen Road if the plans get the green light.

The erection of a new Lidl in the area has been described as a 'major development' in the application, and the supermarket would also come with a car park. However, neighbours living in flats in Wyton Close, near the vacant site, said they already have "too many supermarkets here".

Adrian Balcer, a painter and decorator in the area, 31, said: "There would be too many shops here. We have already got plenty of shops.

"We have got a Co-op, and Aldi. No one needs that many shops, we are surrounded by supermarkets.

"There would be no cutomers because we already have too many. I think we need more homes in the area because these flats are old and damp.

"No one is happy in these flats. People are getting angry because of the damp", he added.

"I think they should build the houses and leave the supermarket. It would be nice to have some green space."

Tom Adamski, also a resident in the area, added: "A playground would be nice. We do not need more supermarkets."

The 43-year-old driver, also a dad, added: "There are many children here with nowhere to play. Give these children a playground or a park.

"I guess it is better than leaving the site as it is. But I just feel like some green space or a park would be better."

However, Marilena Kristiadi, a residential manager, 27, said she would like to have a Lidl on her doorstep as it is "my favourite place to shop at". She added: "It is so cheap, it is the best.

"We have got an Aldi but it is not as good as Lidl. I am glad that they are building more houses too."
