Mississippi Deputy Killed In Line Of Duty

Crime Scene Do not cross

A Mississippi community is grieving the tragic loss of a sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call on Sunday evening. The deputy, identified as 37-year-old Martin Shields, Jr., had been with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office for about nine months. Prior to his time with the HCSO, Shields had served in law enforcement with the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the Jackson Police Department.

The incident took place in Terry, Mississippi, approximately 15 miles southwest of Jackson, where Shields and another deputy were responding to a domestic call. Tragically, Shields was shot and killed during the response. An 'unidentified Black male subject believed to be related to the call' was also found dead inside the residence.

An alert was issued for Eric Brown, 42, who was wanted for questioning in connection with the incident. However, the alert was later canceled as police determined there was no longer an active threat. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation providing assistance.

He had served with the Hinds County Sheriff's Office for about nine months.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones paid tribute to Shields, describing him as a hero who fulfilled his duty to assist those in need. Jones recounted the events leading up to Shields' tragic death and highlighted the outpouring of support at the scene.

Shields' passing adds to a somber weekend for law enforcement nationwide, with other officers losing their lives in separate incidents. The community is coming together to honor Shields' memory and support his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
