A man believed to be a missing US citizen has been discovered in Damascus, Syria, where he informed reporters that he had recently been released from jail. The individual, suspected to be 29-year-old Missouri resident Travis Timmerman, was found by locals wandering barefoot in a neighborhood just south of Damascus.
According to reports, the man claiming to be Timmerman stated that he had been held in a Syrian prison for seven months after illegally entering the country by crossing the border from Lebanon. He mentioned that his reason for traveling to Syria was for spiritual purposes.
It was reported that on Monday, two armed men broke down his cell door at the prison, and he, along with a large group, attempted to reach Jordan. Despite his ordeal, Timmerman mentioned that his time in the Syrian prison was relatively tolerable. He stated that he was not physically abused during his detention, although he did express discomfort regarding limited access to bathroom facilities, being allowed to use the restroom only three times a day.
Similar remarks were made by Timmerman in an interview with the Al-Arabiya TV network on Thursday.
