Two men have been arrested after a beloved Paddington Bear statue was cut in half and stolen.
A statue of Britain’s favourite bear was smashed in half, and the broken piece was taken at around 2am on Sunday in Newbury, Berkshire.
The damaged state has since been found by police, who arrested two 22-year-old men, both from Basingstoke, on suspicion of theft and criminal damage.
The pair both remain in police custody while Paddington “is heading to Newbury police station for a much-needed marmalade sandwich”, Thames Valley Police said.
Inspector Alan Hawkett, said: “The Paddington Bear statue is a beloved part of Newbury so we have been doing everything we can to locate it and the offenders.
“I am delighted we have made two arrests and recovered the statue, which we will keep safe and support its restoration to its rightful place in Northbrook Street.
“In the meantime, Paddington is heading to Newbury police station for a much-needed marmalade sandwich.
“Anyone with information about the theft and criminal damage should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43250102626.
“Alternatively, provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported our investigation so far and shared their memories of the statue with us.”
Paddington statues were unveiled across the UK and Ireland last year as part of a nationwide trail celebrating everyone’s favourite marmalade-loving bear.
A total of 23 statues were put up to allow Paddington lovers, young and old, to seek him out in their very own adventures.
The Paddington Visits trail was launched ahead of the release of the film Paddington in Peru.
