Minnie Mouse ditches famous red polka dot dress for very, very different outfit

When you think of Minnie Mouse, one of the first things that comes to mind for most people is her iconic red dress with white polka dots and a matching bow between her ears.

But in a new shake-up that's been dividing opinion, the longtime Walt Disney character and the girlfriend of Disney mascot Mickey Mouse is set to ditch the dress for a brand new look that brings her firmly into the 21st century.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Disneyland Paris theme park, Minnie will swap out the red dress for a stylish dark blue suit complete with trousers and a blazer, as well as a blue and black bow to match.

The new outfit was designed by Stella McCartney, and Minnie will rock the look during theme party's anniversary party in March - which will also coincide with Women's History Month.

Disneyland Paris shared a sneak peek at Minnie's outfit earlier this week, tweeting: "Stella McCartney has designed Minnie Mouse's very first pantsuit, and it's gorgeous. #DisneylandParis30."

And speaking to D23 about the collaboration, Stella - who is the daughter of Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney - said she "can't wait" for Disney fans to see the new look in person at the event.

She said: “Minnie has always had a special place in my heart. We share the same values. What I love about Minnie is the fact that she embodies happiness, self-expression, authenticity, and that she inspires people of all ages around the world. Plus, she has such great style!

“This new take on her signature polka dots makes Minnie Mouse a symbol of progress for a new generation. She will wear it in honour of Women’s History Month in March 2022. I can’t wait for you to see this new look at Walt Disney Studios Park!”

The unveiling of Minnie's new look has split opinion online, as while some are embracing the change others aren't impressed.

One person said on Twitter : "I applaud Stella McCartney and Disney for bringing Minnie into the 21st Century."

And another agreed, adding: "I think it's cute!"

But someone else argued against the blue colour scheme, stating: "The idea of the pantsuit is so cute, but we need to have the iconic Minnie Mouse colours to go with it!"

As a fourth said: "This just doesn't feel like the Minnie I grew up with."

Minnie is also set to join other famed Walt Disney characters in wearing outfits created especially for the anniversary during instances where she is not donning the new suit.

Disneyland Paris first opened its gates to the public on April 12, 1992, and it has since hosted more than 375 million visitors.

In a statement about their anniversary, the park said: “Disneyland Paris has, over the years, created unforgettable memories that last a lifetime … no wonder it’s become Europe’s top tourist destination!

"The resort is known for bringing unique ideas to life, exploring new paths, and continuously reinventing itself.”
