Minnesota Vikings Cornerback Mekhi Blackmon Tears ACL In Practice

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Mekhi Blackmon sustained a significant injury during the team's first training camp practice. The injury, identified as a torn ACL, occurred during a routine drill on Wednesday. This unfortunate development was confirmed by a source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity as the team had not yet made an official announcement.

Blackmon, a promising second-year player hailing from Southern California, had displayed potential during his rookie season after being selected in the third round of the draft. His contributions included one interception, one fumble recovery, and eight passes defensed in 15 games played. The cornerback, who was a key component of the team's nickel package, was injured during a 7-on-7 passing drill and subsequently received medical attention on the field before being escorted to the training room for further evaluation.

This injury comes as a significant setback for the Vikings, particularly considering the recent loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson in a tragic car accident. Jackson, a fourth-round draft pick from Oregon, passed away alongside two friends earlier this month. The team continues to mourn his untimely death, with several coaches set to attend his funeral on Friday.

With Blackmon sidelined and the absence of Jackson, the Vikings' cornerback group faces challenges heading into the new season. While Byron Murphy Jr. and Shaq Griffin provide stability in the lineup, the team has signed Duke Shelley for additional depth and experience. Akayleb Evans, who started 15 games last season, will also be relied upon despite facing struggles towards the end of the campaign. Andrew Booth Jr., another potential contributor from the 2022 draft class, aims to overcome injury concerns and establish himself as a regular presence in the lineup.

The Vikings are navigating a difficult period as they address these setbacks in their cornerback unit. The team will need to rely on depth and resilience to overcome these challenges and maintain a competitive edge in the upcoming season.
