Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has shown his support for student loan debt forgiveness, although he has not been as vocal about the issue compared to his running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
As a former public school teacher, Walz enacted a student debt forgiveness program for nurses and healthcare workers last year. This program offers eligible health workers 15% of the average loan debt in their specific field if they complete a two-year contract in a designated area or engage in teaching.
In a recent campaign event near the Michigan State University campus, Walz emphasized the importance of addressing student loan debt and climate change. He reminisced about a time when working a minimum wage job during the summer could cover an entire year's tuition at the University of Minnesota.
