Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz recently signed two state proclamations that shed light on his background and accomplishments, coinciding with his new role as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate. The first proclamation, signed on Wednesday, designates August 7, 2024, as “Combat Wounded Veterans Purple Heart Day” in Minnesota. The second proclamation, signed on Thursday, declares the day as “Farm Family Recognition Day” in the state. These proclamations mark Walz’s initial official actions as governor following his selection as Harris’ running mate.
The proclamation honoring wounded veterans comes at a time when Walz's military service record has faced scrutiny. Critics, including GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, have raised questions about Walz's service history, alleging that he exaggerated his record and avoided deployment to Iraq while serving in the Army National Guard. Walz retired just before his unit received orders to deploy to Iraq, despite referring to firearms as weapons he used in combat, despite not being deployed to a combat zone during his 24 years of service.
In the proclamation, Walz acknowledges the sacrifices made by wounded veterans, stating, “There are many individuals who have given their lives and suffered injuries in service who have yet to receive the Purple Heart. Minnesota reaffirms its dedication to honoring their memory and providing support to their families and communities.”
Walz’s recognition of farm families aligns with the Harris campaign’s efforts to emphasize his Midwestern roots, particularly to rural voters in the region. Upon being announced as Harris’ running mate, the campaign unveiled a camouflage hat featuring the Harris-Walz campaign logo. Walz, who grew up working on a family farm, expressed his support for farmers, ranchers, and producers, acknowledging the challenges they face and pledging full backing to ensure a stable food supply for Minnesota and beyond.
