Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s team has been engaging in debate prep sessions dubbed “Camp North Star” in woodsy northern Michigan. The relaxed atmosphere aims to cultivate authentic aspects of Walz’s identity, according to a source familiar with the sessions. The debate enclave in Harbor Springs, Michigan, is focused on allowing the governor to stay true to himself rather than transforming into a polished debater.
During his stay in Harbor Springs, Walz has taken part in various activities such as hiking, enjoying pizza at a local restaurant, and visiting a farm where he interacted with goats and rabbits. He also had some fun shooting pumpkins from a hydraulic squash launcher at the farm. The staff accompanying Walz have been seen supporting their favorite football teams, with televisions tuned to professional and college games over the weekend. Some staff members have even engaged in friendly football tosses between debate sessions.
One notable participant in the debate prep sessions is Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who has been portraying Ohio Sen. JD Vance. Buttigieg surprised staff by showing up in a red tie, mimicking Vance’s typical campaign trail attire.
