Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently addressed the International Association of Fire Fighters at their annual convention in Boston, seeking their support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. The union, one of the largest labor unions in the country, is yet to endorse a candidate.
During his speech, Governor Walz highlighted Vice President Harris' pro-union stance, citing her efforts in protecting union pensions while serving as California's attorney general. He also praised her role in passing the 2021 Covid stimulus package, which he claimed helped to keep workers employed during the pandemic.
Walz emphasized the importance of unions in America, stating, 'When unions are strong, America is strong.' He urged the firefighters to actively engage in the presidential race, reminding them that 'politics is into you' and encouraging them to support Harris's campaign.
Referring to the impact of the union's endorsement, Walz used a baseball metaphor, calling on the firefighters to 'step up to the plate' and help protect labor rights in the final 69 days leading up to the election.
The governor's remarks were well-received by the audience, as both the Harris and Trump campaigns vie for the union's endorsement to secure the support of working-class voters across the nation. Ohio Senator JD Vance, the GOP vice presidential candidate, is also scheduled to address the union at the convention.
