Minnesota First Responders Memorial Service Draws Thousands

Thousands of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics are expected to gather at a Minnesota church for a memorial service honoring three first responders who tragically lost their lives while responding to a domestic incident in Burnsville.

The community has been in mourning following the deaths of police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, along with firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth, who were fatally shot by Shannon Gooden during a standoff at his home. Gooden later took his own life.

The memorial service will take place at Grace Church in Eden Prairie, with overflow viewing options available at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville. A procession of public safety vehicles will follow the service route, passing key locations in Burnsville as a tribute to the fallen heroes.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety spokesperson Howie Padilla highlighted the unprecedented nature of the service, expecting a large turnout from various first responder agencies.

Details of the incident remain limited due to the ongoing investigation led by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The tragic events unfolded in the early hours of February 18th when officers responded to a call at Gooden's residence.

Despite efforts to negotiate with Gooden, he opened fire on the officers inside the home, resulting in the deaths of Elmstrand, Ruge, and Finseth. Sergeant Adam Medlicott survived the ordeal and is currently recovering at home.

Gooden, who was not permitted to possess firearms due to his criminal history, fired over 100 rounds before taking his own life. The initial 911 call mentioned an alleged sexual assault, shedding light on the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.

The community continues to mourn the loss of these brave first responders, whose dedication and sacrifice will be honored during the memorial service as Minnesota comes together to pay their respects.
