An outbreak of E. coli poisoning in Minnesota has been linked to a national recall of over 167,000 pounds of ground beef. At least 15 people in Minnesota have fallen ill due to this contamination, which has been traced back to Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co.

The recall was initiated after Minnesota state agriculture officials discovered multiple cases of illness and confirmed that a sample of the ground beef tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, a strain known to cause severe infections.

Fortunately, no cases of illness have been reported outside of Minnesota so far, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department. The affected individuals experienced symptoms between November 2 and November 10, prompting an ongoing investigation into the source of the contamination.

E. coli is a type of bacteria commonly found in various environments, including water, food, and the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, certain types can lead to serious health issues when ingested.

Symptoms of E. coli poisoning typically manifest within a day or two of consuming contaminated food and may include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and signs of dehydration. In severe cases, especially among children under the age of 5, the infection can result in serious kidney damage, necessitating immediate medical attention.

It is crucial for individuals who suspect they may have been exposed to contaminated ground beef to seek medical assistance promptly to prevent further complications. The investigation into this E. coli outbreak is ongoing as health officials work to ensure the safety of consumers.
