Minister heads to Bali for G20 women talks

World leaders attending the G20 summit later this year will be asked to endorse a plan to empower women.

Minister for Women Katy Gallagher will head to Bali on Wednesday to discuss the plan with ministerial colleagues ahead of the mid-November leaders’ summit to be attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The women’s ministerial conference was established under the Italian G20 presidency in 2021.

Senator Gallagher said Australia was committed to being a global leader in gender equality.

“The conference presents a unique opportunity to discuss the many issues facing women around the world and to directly inform recommendations to G20 leaders who will meet in Bali later this year,” she told AAP.

“There are many unique challenges that each country is facing when it comes to women’s policy, but there are also many issues that are commonly shared and that we can work on solutions for, together.

“I look forward to sharing the Albanese Labor government’s plans for women at the conference and also listening to the lessons and ideas of other women’s ministers.”

She will also hold bilateral meetings with women’s ministers from Indonesia, the European Union, the UK, India and Fiji.

G20 leaders last year reaffirmed their commitment to gender equality and the pivotal role of women’s and girls’ empowerment and leadership.

Work is being done on access to education and opportunities, entrepreneurship and leadership, and the elimination of gender-based violence.

Also of focus is the enhancement of social, health, care and educational services, the overcoming of gender stereotypes, and the uneven distribution of unpaid care and domestic work.
