‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ given alternate ending by Chinese censors, report says

An addendum reportedly added by Chinese censors to “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is getting a rise out of viewers.

China’s screenings of the animated family film include a message claiming a character who faked his own death to avoid being arrested was ultimately caught and jailed for 20 years, posts on the social media website Weibo claim, according to Reuters.

Posts also claim that the addendum suggests the villainous Gru returned to his family at the film’s conclusion, saying “his biggest accomplishment is being the father to his three girls.”

The addendum serves as an alternate ending to a film that outside of China concludes with both characters driving off with the yellow henchmen known as the Minions.

Earlier this year, viewers observed an alternate ending was added to 1999′s Brad Pitt and Edward Norton-led “Fight Club” on the Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video.

The edit replaced a scene in which skyscrapers are detonated with a message claiming police “rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding.” The movie’s original conclusion was later added back on the platform.

Many high-profile Hollywood films, including the latest Marvel flicks, have not come out in China amid the country’s strict guidelines for releases.
