Mini Mela lights up Newcastle City Centre with music, art and comedy

A traffic-free city centre was lit up with a Mini Mela on Saturday afternoon.

The Mela in the City was arranged as part of the Blackett Street Family Fun weekends, which see the road closed to traffic and decorated with artificial grass, furniture and giant games.

On Saturday, Newcastle Asian Arts & Music organised a city centre Mela, which celebrated South Asian culture.

Bhangra singer, Shin DCS, performed for crowds, as did Punjabi singer and producer Juggy D.

Street theatre, magic and comedy were also performed.

Adrian Waddell, Chief Executive of NE1 Ltd said: "We’ve worked with NAAM to bring back MELA into the City Centre for the second year. It is a wonderful showcase for the full MELA celebrations that take place in Newcastle later in the month and a fun way to involve the wider city in the festivities."

The event was a warm up for Newcastle Mela, which takes place in Exhibition Park over the August Bank Holiday.

The line-up mixes contemporary Asian art and music with traditional displays.

Entry will be free.
