Four Milwaukee hotel employees have been charged with felony murder in connection with the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, as per prosecutors. The incident occurred on June 30 at the Hyatt Hotel, where Mitchell was reportedly dragged out of the premises by the employees after entering a woman's bathroom. The criminal complaint states that Mitchell was held on his stomach for approximately eight to nine minutes.
During this time, one of the employees mentioned to investigators that Mitchell was struggling to breathe and repeatedly asked for assistance. An autopsy revealed that Mitchell suffered from morbid obesity and had consumed cocaine and methamphetamine.
Family members of Mitchell, along with their legal representatives, were able to view hotel surveillance footage provided by the district attorney's office. They claimed to have witnessed security guards chasing Mitchell inside the hotel before dragging him outside, where he was allegedly subjected to physical violence.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, part of the legal team representing Mitchell's family, raised concerns about the incident. He referred to a video circulating on social media that purportedly shows security guards applying pressure on Mitchell's back and neck. Crump questioned the lack of charges related to Mitchell's death by Milwaukee authorities.
Aimbridge Hospitality, the hotel management company, confirmed that several employees involved in the incident have been terminated from their positions.
