The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that they will be honoring the late broadcaster Bob Uecker with a special patch on their uniforms for the upcoming season. Uecker, who passed away last month at the age of 90, was a beloved figure in the Brewers organization, having completed his 54th season of broadcasting for the team.
The patch, which will be worn on the sleeve of the Brewers' uniforms, features Uecker's signature over a gold-and-navy plaid print, paying tribute to the iconic sportscoats he was known for wearing. Fans will get to see the patch in action for the first time when the Brewers kick off their preseason schedule on February 22 against the Cincinnati Reds in Phoenix.
Despite battling small cell lung cancer, Uecker remained dedicated to his broadcasting duties and continued to entertain fans with his wit and humor. In addition to his work with the Brewers, Uecker also gained fame for his commercial appearances and acting roles in popular films and television shows.
Recognizing Uecker's contributions to the sport, the Hall of Fame honored him with the Ford C. Frick Award in 2003. Following his passing, Brewers fans paid tribute to Uecker by leaving baseballs, flowers, cans of Miller Lite beer, and other mementos at the base of his statue outside Milwaukee's American Family Field.
Brewers president of business operations, Rick Schlesinger, expressed the team's deep sense of loss at Uecker's absence and highlighted the jersey patch as a way to keep his memory alive during games.
