Jim Redmond, who helped his son cross the finish line at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has sadly passed away aged 81.
The news was announced by the British Olympic Association, who said the poignant Olympic moment will "never be forgotten."
The legendary interaction between father and son has been dubbed as "one of the most inspirational moments in Olympic history" in a recent post by The Olympic Games on Twitter.
Team GB athlete Derek Redmond had his sights set on securing a medal and was running in the 400m semi-final, after finishing the previous round as the fastest in his heat.
However, as Derek came into the home straight, he pulled his hamstring, leaving his dreams of a medal in tatters.
In a quite remarkable moment, Derek's father Jim rushed from his seat in the crowd to assist his son. He ushered away officials who appeared to be trying to stop him from supporting Derek over the finishing line.
The video has been viewed millions of times on social media and the inspiring moment has seen an uplift in viewers following the passing of Jim.
On YouTube the clip has picked up 3.4 million views since 2011, whilst on Instagram it has picked up two million views in one day on a single account.
It is clear to see the impact this incredible moment of compassion has on the general public.
"I do not know this man. But he inspired me to be a better man and father. You never know who you will inspire. Rest easy Jim, your work here is done." said one on Twitter.
"I love this video and I love this man. He personifies the word: DAD. RIP" said another on Instagram.
