Millions of Scots sent emergency Government phone alert for Storm Eowyn

MILLIONS of Scots received an alert on their mobile phones on Thursday warning them of the imminent danger from Storm Eowyn from the UK Government.

An alarm along with an alert message was sent to the mobile phones of Scots in areas which are likely to see serious danger to life at around 5.50pm on Thursday.

The message follows the Met Office’s announcement of a rare red weather warning for Friday, January 24.

The UK Government’s emergency siren accompanied a message which said that due to extremely strong winds forecasted for the storm people should expected “significant disruption”

It added that strong winds can be a danger to life due to flying debris, falling trees and large waves around coastal areas as it encouraged people to stay indoors.

The message also warned people that Storm Eowyn could cause damage to key infrastructure which may result in power cuts and disruption to mobile phone coverage.

People have been encouraged to gather torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs and other essential items for their homes and to follow the police and the Met Offices instructions.

The alert read: “A RED warning for wind has been issued.

“Extremely strong winds associated with Storm Eowyn are expected to cause significant disruption from 10am on Friday 24 January.

“Strong winds can present a danger to life, causing flying debris, falling trees and large waves around coastal areas. Stay indoors if you can. It is unsafe to drive in these conditions. Avoid coastal areas.

“The storm may damage infrastructure causing power cuts and disruption to mobile phone coverage. Consider gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items you already have at home.

“Stay up to date with the weather forecast and follow advice from emergency services, network operators and local authorities.
