Millions of families on Universal Credit have £62 taken from payments - find your area

Millions of families on Universal Credit are having around £62 taken from their payments each month.

Households can have part of their benefits entitlement siphoned off by the government to repay debts.

Figures show that in most areas of the country thousands of people are being hit by the deductions.

Tory ministers have ignored pleas from campaigners including former PM Gordon Brown to stop taking the money away as families struggle with the cost of living crisis.

Single people over 25 get a Universal Credit standard allowance of £334.91-a-month, plus top-ups for housing, children and disability.

But up to a quarter of this can be subtracted by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to cover debts repayments.

Almost half of deductions are to pay back advances, issued to cover the five-week wait for people’s first Universal Credit payment.

One fifth are to pay back Tax Credits which the government overpaid people in the past, and refuses to write off.

Latest figures show that 2.1million households across the country had deductions from their welfare payments in August, totalling £132.6million. The average amount taken was £62.

The constituency with the most people affected was Birmingham Ladywood where 10,000 Universal Credit claimants had deductions.

There were 9,200 households that had money taken in Leeds Central, 8,600 in Manchester Central, 8,600 in Tottenham and 8,300 in Blackley and Broughton.

Other constituencies with a large number of affected families were Brent Central, Middlesbrough, West Ham, Birmingham Erdington, Croydon North, Liverpool Walton, Bradford East and Birmingham Hodge Hill.

Labour ’s Beth Winter, who uncovered figures, called on ministers to pause the deductions during what is now “the worst cost of living crisis for a generation”.

The MP for Cynon Valley in South Wales said: “It is appalling that over half of the residents in my constituency on Universal Credit face deductions.

“There are literally thousands of people in every part of the country who use Universal Credit as a lifeline who are having some of their money taken away through no fault of their own.

“We need to suspend these deductions during this cost of living crisis like we did in Covid, but also convert advance payments into grants and write off debts from government errors.

“Christmas is a time to look out for those less fortunate but you wouldn't know it with this Conservative Government.”

A DWP spokesman said: "Deductions help protect claimants from enforcement actions such as eviction, ensure priority debts such as child maintenance are still addressed and help to recover taxpayers' money.

"We have reduced the standard cap on deductions twice in recent years, to 25 per cent of the Universal Credit standard allowance, doubled the period over which new claims can be repaid and stopped utility companies from being able to increase payments automatically.

"But we recognise people are struggling with rising prices and we're are protecting millions of those most in need with at least £1,200 this year including £400 towards energy costs and our Energy Price Guarantee, which will save around £900 for a typical household over the winter."
