Millions At Risk Of Losing Internet Access Due To Funding

Internet technology

The Biden administration has issued a warning that tens of millions of Americans could face a significant increase in internet bills or even be disconnected from their plans due to a funding shortfall. This situation is attributed to congressional Republicans, who are being blamed for the potential disruption of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).

The ACP has been instrumental in providing internet access to over 23 million households in the United States, many of which are experiencing connectivity for the first time. If the program is not extended, these households may have to pay hundreds of dollars more annually to maintain their internet service.

By the end of the month, the funding for the ACP is expected to run out, putting at risk the monthly discounts on internet services that benefit an estimated 59 million low-income individuals, including veterans, students, and older Americans. The potential shutdown of the program could force many subscribers to make difficult choices between paying for essentials like groceries or internet services.

Efforts to extend the ACP through legislation have faced obstacles, with the Biden administration urging Congress to approve $6 billion to continue the program. A bipartisan bill introduced in January has garnered support from both Democrats and Republicans, but challenges remain in getting the legislation passed.

The Federal Communications Commission has begun winding down the ACP, prompting concerns about the impact on vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens and military households. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has highlighted the importance of extending the program to prevent disruptions for millions of households, particularly those with children relying on internet access for educational purposes.

Despite bipartisan support for the ACP extension, the lack of action from Republican leaders in Congress has created a stalemate that could lead to the collapse of the program by early May. The Biden administration has emphasized the urgency of finding a solution to avoid the potential consequences of losing the ACP.

As the deadline approaches, the fate of the ACP remains uncertain, with calls for swift legislative action to secure funding and ensure continued internet access for millions of Americans.
