Million pound makeover planned to transform old bank into boutique hotel and café bar

A £1m makeover is being planned to transform and old bank into a boutique apartment style hotel and a quirky café bar. The former HSBC bank on Taff Street in the centre of Pontypridd has been purchased by the owner of Lanelay Hotel who has plans to turn the four story building into a five star hotel.

Dave Edwards, who also owns the luxurious Forest Retreat in Llantrisant which often hosts Gareth Bale and Tyson Fury bought the old bank at auction for £270,000. The business owner told WalesOnline he has grand plans to turn it into a five star hotel and café bar.

The bank went to auction in October 2022 with a guide price of £250,000. You can view photos from inside the building in its current state here.

Dave told WalesOnline: "I have loved the building for years, it is a beautiful building. And Pontypridd is crying out for accommodation. In the next year, there will be trains leaving Pontypridd for Cardiff every five to ten minutes. There is going to be a real boom in that area in the next five years because of it.

"Pontypridd is calling out for accommodation, and I know others have put planning applications in for hotels too, but the area really needs it. You will have people staying in Pontypridd and being able to get to Cardiff every five minutes."

"The apartments will have views over Ponty park and the river. The interiors will be stunning."

The Cardiff born businessman moved Pontypridd 27 years ago when he met the "love of his life" from Llantrisant. He said he has chosen this area to invest in as he loves the people and described the area as beautiful.

Lanelay Hall is infamous in south Wales for its beautiful and unique interior and the Lanelay Spa is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. He said the building's restoration and renovation will cost over £1m and a planning application will be submitted to Rhondda Cynon Taf council in the next four weeks.

Should all go to plan Dave said he aims for the business to be open and running in January 2024.
