A man has been charged over a near three-year-old silver heist in which a tonne of bullion worth more than $1 million was stolen from an interstate shipment.

The 40-year-old was arrested on Tuesday on allegations he was involved in the theft of the silver, which is still missing after disappearing while it was being transported between Sydney and Melbourne in November 2021.

The theft was not discovered until the truck arrived in Melbourne after leaving from Maldon, in the Macarthur region southwest of Sydney.

The consignment was made up of 192 individual 5kg bars of silver bearing a distinctive stamp.

They had an estimated value of just over $1 million at the time of theft and are worth about $1.4 million in current prices.

The man was arrested at Wee Jasper, west of Canberra, and charged with larceny and being armed with the intent of committing an indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear at Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday.

Electronic devices and business records were also seized from properties in Bargo and Tahmoor, inland from Wollongong.

Police launched a public appeal for information in late 2021 following the theft, which they said was being investigated as a possible inside job.

Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Smith said at the time that it was an unusual robbery and a lot of resources were being deployed to catch those involved.

Police are renewing their appeal for any information that can help detectives recover the stolen silver.
