Stranger Things breakout star Millie Bobby Brown has called out journalists by name for producing stories surrounding her physical appearance.
In a scathing Instagram video, Millie Bobby Brown — who’s recently been hustling the red carpet ahead of her upcoming sci-fi flick The Electric State — shot down a number of journalists for “mocking” her appearance, with some articles being published in the last week during her press tour.
“I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me, something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny,” she began in her incredibly candid post.
“I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow up with me. Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season One.”

Furthermore, in her heartfelt statement, the Enola Holmes star began listing headlines with the names of journalists behind the story, criticising them for “bullying”.
“Let’s talk about the articles, the headlines, the people who are so desperate to tear young women down,” she began.
“‘Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown ageing so badly?’ by Lydia Hawken. ‘What has Millie Bobby Brown done to her face?’ by John Ely. ‘Millie Bobby Brown mistaken for someone’s mom as she guides younger sister Ava through LA’ by Cassie Carpenter.
‘Little Britain’s Matt Lucas takes savage swipe at Millie Bobby Brown’s new “mommy makeover” look’—written by Bethan Edwards, amplifying an insult rather than questioning why a grown man is mocking a young woman’s appearance.”

“This isn’t journalism. This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing,” Brown continued.
“The fact that some of these articles are written by women makes it even worse. We always talk about supporting and uplifting young women, but when the time comes, it seems easier to tear them down for clicks.”
Towards the end of her statement, Brown said she “refuses to apologise for growing up” and that she refuses to conform to “unrealistic expectations”, pleading for society to do better when it comes to writing about young women.
“Let’s do better. Not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existing,” Brown shared.
Brown’s statement has been promptly met with support, with many fans praising the star for calling out the journalist by their name.
“Thank you so much for speaking on this! You’re a beautiful soul, Mills,” one fan wrote.
“Calling them out by name. Love you,” another commented.
“Extremely proud of you for standing up for yourself and using your voice to speak up for young girls everywhere. it’s so upsetting that you even have to make a video like this and that people try to tear down others’ appearances instead of spreading joy,” wrote a third.
At the time of writing, the publications and journalists listed in Brown’s statement have not responded to the actor’s takedown. But let’s hope it redirects society’s comfortability with how they speak about women and their bodies.
