A MILITARY aircraft has landed safely at Williamtown after declaring a mid-air emergency on Wednesday.

An emergency operation unfolded at the airport north of Newcastle after an Australian Defence Force E-7A Wedgetail declared an emergency mid-air on November 6.

A Defence spokesperson told the Newcastle Herald that the aircraft, with a crew of 10 on board, had suffered "an airborne incident".

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base as part of "standard incident response procedures," the spokesperson said.

The plane landed safely at Williamtown on Wednesday.

No one was injured in the ordeal but all 10 people involved were medically assessed.

"Defence can confirm all personnel on board are safe," the spokesperson said.

"An investigation will be initiated.

"At this stage, it would be inappropriate to comment further.

"Defence asks that members' privacy be respected at this time."

The spokesperson said Defence was committed to ensuring the safety of Australian Defence Force personnel during training activities.

In a separate incident at Newcastle Airport earlier this year, a plane not connected with the RAAF base managed to carry out an emergency wheels-up landing.
