'Miles of traffic' and long delays on M4 after vehicles held up in 'police incident'

This was the traffic jam that hundreds of people found themselves stuck in while travelling along the M4 on Saturday. Drivers and passengers found themselves waiting for so long, one passenger heading in the other direction reported they saw people get out of their cars.

Sharing photos of the congestion, Traffic Wales South issued an alert on social media and said: "Police incident on the M4 J23A Magor Westbound All traffic currently held at this time."

An update a short time later said: "Traffic has now been released. Congestion in the area due to the previously held block." Further updates read: "Prince of Wales bridge to J23A Magor Westbound [congestion]. This is due to a lane one closure currently in place due to an earlier police incident."

One witness told WalesOnline that while they were travelling from Newport to Bristol, they saw people on the other side of road get out of their cars. They said the incident caused "miles of traffic" and that people were even "playing football and taking selfies whilst they wait".

She added: "We were coming out of Newport to Bristol and the traffic was the opposite direction. Everyone out of their cars at a standstill - they looked as if they’d been waiting a long time."

Video footage long tailbacks with cars, vans and lorries at a standstill. It's understood traffic was halted after a car broke down on the J23A offslip in Magor. Traffic officers and police were reportedly called to the scene and traffic was busy for several hours until returning to normal shortly after 7pm.
