Mile-high margaritas, cocktails adorn Virgin's revamped in-flight menu

Virgin Australia's food and drink offerings just got more festive for summer with margaritas and gin cocktails, chocolate waffles, and corn chips and salsa on the menu at 35,000 feet.

The airline's new economy class "buy on board" menu for the sunny season includes Batched salted grapefruit margaritas and Papa Salt gin palomas.

On selected flights, customers can purchase spinach and ricotta cannelloni and honey chicken fried rice. For dessert or a sweet treat, passengers can enjoy hot Belgian chocolate waffles and Byron Bay Triple Choc Cookies.

The business class menu is also being revamped and passengers at the pointy end of the plane will soon be able to savour a waffle with rhubarb mascarpone, strawberries and maple syrup, and a passionfruit mango pancake stack.

There will also be a chicken noodle salad with nuoc nam dressing, and a beef quesadilla with charred corn salsa, launching from November 20.

Other new business class menu items include pork in sticky lemon sauce with aged rice and vegetables, southern-style chicken with potato wedges, vegetables and boscaiola sauce, and salted caramel slice.

Virgin Australia's general manager product and customer strategy, Ali Dunn, said: "We've curated a diverse selection of meals and snacks that highlight premium Australian produce and cater to a variety of tastes."

The airline has also introduced new digital receipts, making it easier for customers to keep track of their onboard purchases.

Virgin Australia business class passengers enjoy a food service with a rotating menu included in their ticket price, while economy passengers pay for their food and get coffee and tea for free.

Qantas is the only domestic airline in Australia that includes food, baggage, and Wi-Fi in the ticket price.

Qantas recently updated its own inflight menu with 70 new items including a focaccia with chorizo, pesto, bell peppers and Meredith goats cheese, a cheese board with an Australian salt bush chilli jam sandwich, cottage cheese and spinach samosas, triple choc brownie cookies and macadamia granola slices.

Earlier in the year, the national carrier began offering Campari to its business class passengers.

Lindt Lindor balls are popular on Qantas flights, and the carrier served over 2.8 million of the chocolates across the domestic network in 2023.
