Milan-Cortina Olympics Organizers Navigate Transport Strike Concerns

Construction work takes place at the Cortina Sliding Center, venue for the bob, luge and skeleton disciplines, at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Thursday, Jan. 16

A recent transport strike in Milan during an official test event for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics has underscored the importance of negotiations with trade unions to prevent similar disruptions during the Winter Games next year. Workers for Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) went on strike, causing Milan’s metro, bus, and tram services to come to a standstill. Emergency measures had to be implemented to transport schoolchildren to the short-track speedskating event venue in Assago, which will also host the sport during the Olympics.

Public transport will play a crucial role in connecting the six different venue clusters spread across northern Italy for the Milan-Cortina Games. Organizers are emphasizing the need for a reliable transport system to ensure the smooth operation of the games.

Italy has experienced frequent strikes by trade unions, affecting various sectors including transport, education, and healthcare. Discussions are underway with labor unions and public entities to avert potential strikes during the Olympics, scheduled to take place from February 6 to February 22, 2026.

The 2026 Winter Games will be the first to implement cost-cutting reforms by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will largely utilize existing venues. The upcoming Olympics will also coincide with a change in IOC leadership, with a new president set to be elected next month.

Despite potential leadership transitions, ticket sales for the Milan-Cortina Games have been promising, with 300,000 tickets sold in the initial six days of sales. Open ticket sales will commence in April, offering a range of affordable options for spectators.

Progress on Venue Construction

Construction progress on the controversial sliding center in Cortina is advancing, signaling a shift away from the backup plan in Lake Placid, New York. The Italian government is fast-tracking the construction of the sliding center, with pre-certification expected by the end of March.

Environmental concerns have been raised regarding the impact of rebuilding the Cortina track, but organizers highlight the sustainability benefits of the new facility. The track's power plant will also supply energy to Cortina’s ice arena, enhancing the venue's sustainability.

The Cortina track's completion will not only benefit the 2026 Winter Olympics but also serve as a venue for the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics.
