Mikey Johnston has left Celtic on loan in order to get more game time.
The Scotland Under 21 international has sealed a season-long loan switch to Vitoria Guimaraes. Johnston had looked set to move to Standard Liege in order to reunite with former Hoops boss Ronny Deila. However, the switch wasn't rubber stamped by the Belgian club's new sporting director Fergal Harkin. Hearts had also reportedly required about Johnston's availability.
However, Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Guimaraes won the race for his signature and confirmed his capture until the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Since making his return from injury last season, Johnston has struggled to force his way into Ange Postecoglou's plans. The permanent signing of Jota over the summer as well as the arrival of Sead Haksabanovic didn't improve his chances either.
The loan does not appear to have ended Johnston's hopes of a future in Glasgow's east end. The club have confirmed he has agreed a one year contract extension.
