Mikel Arteta told Arsenal dodged bullet with £50m Raheem Sterling transfer decision

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin labelled Raheem Sterling's performance in their sobering 4-1 defeat to Brighton as "absolutely terrible".

Graham Potter's return to the South Coast was one to forget as his former side cruised to three points in Roberto de Zerbi's first win as Seagulls boss.

The Italian was Potter's replacement as the former Brighton boss replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge. One of the signings that the German made in the summer was Sterling - a player on Arsenal's radar.

The Gunners opted against making a move for the England international as they looked to strengthen in the wide areas. There were further reports that Raphinha was also a target prior to his move to Barcelona.

Instead, Arsenal welcomed the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieria and Oleksandr Zinchenko to the Emirates. Speaking during BBC's coverage of Chelsea's defeat at the AMEX Stadium, Pat Nevin proved that the hierarchy made the right decision in looking beyond the former Liverpool and Manchester City winger.

He said: "I'm watching Raheem Sterling right now, and I've said that Graham Potter has got the best from every player since he has been there, with one exception. Raheem Sterling.

"If he keeps playing the way he is right now, he's not even a consideration for the World Cup. He is having a really, really bad time, and today he is having an absolutely terrible game."
