Mikel Arteta 'surprised' by Marquinhos Arsenal development with January transfer plan revealed

Marquinhos has impressed at Arsenal since joining the club in the summer from Brazilian club Sao Paolo in a deal worth roughly £3million. The 19-year-old was a signing that kept the future in mind, hoping to develop him in the years to come to be yet another superstar coming through the ranks.

It's the sort of strategy that saw the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba make their journey to becoming guaranteed players in the first-team at such a young age. While that likely meant the young Brazilian wouldn't be involved in action, that hasn't been the case since his arrival.

The winger has featured in the squad for the Gunners in recent weeks and even earned himself a debut against FC Zurich in the Europa League group stages. Marquinhos thrived during the game, bagging a goal and an assist featuring some emotional scenes after his opener.

When asked last month about the decision to keep the Brazilian around the squad, manager Mikel Arteta said: "He’s a really likeable figure in the dressing room and around [London] Colney even if his language is not great yet.

"I think his physicality has been pretty exceptional for someone coming from Brazil with a different way to train and to play the way he’s done it. I think he’s got very good qualities for how we want to play."

Given the congested fixture schedule, Marquinhos' presence could prove to be an important one if he can continue to perform at that level. However, according to GOAL, the Gunners are "surprised" with just how far he has progressed already, putting him ahead of schedule from where they expected.

The report claims that his place will still depend on performances and how he adjusts, opening up the possibility of a loan move in January to help him gain regular game time. It may prove a huge decision for the management staff to make, given how quickly he has just moved to the club.

However, should he come back an improved player from the experience, that could prove an important learning curve for his future at the Emirates.
