Mikel Arteta’s major Arsenal target destroyed by Liverpool as they leave Gunners fans gutted

Arsenal supporters have been left disappointed after a tepid performance from the Gunners saw them knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage.

The Gunners failed to really trouble Liverpool on the night, with a brace from Portuguese forward Diogo Jota being enough for the Reds to claim victory and a place in the final against Chelsea.

Arsenal’s misery was compounded midway through the second-half as Thomas Partey ’s swift return from the Africa Cup of Nations lasted only a matter of minutes after he was sent off for two bookable offences.

Their elimination from the tournament means the club could finish yet another season without a trophy, barring an utterly unprecedented and miraculous reversal in fortunes in the Premier League.

It also means that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has failed to add more silverware to the cabinet having previously claimed the FA Cup and Community Shield, with the Spaniard having targeted more trophies.

Speaking shortly after his appointment, the former midfielder said: "Winning brings togetherness.

“When you have beautiful experiences together and win trophies those experiences stay within the group. You like more the people you work with, you believe in them, you share some fantastic moments. That stays.

"That habit of winning, winning, winning. When you win you don't want to stop. You become addicts to that. We have to try to implement that at this football club."

The result has also left Arsenal fans utterly floored and they took to Twitter to express their thoughts.

Arsenal will hope to bounce back in the Premier League this weekend as they take on Burnley at the Emirates Stadium.

They currently sit sixth in the standings and two points behind fourth-placed West Ham United, albeit with two games in hand.

Should they fail to win, Arteta’s men could potentially drop a further place with Manchester United set to take on the Hammers at the weekend.
