Mikel Arteta's Lisandro Martinez plan revealed amid Manchester United transfer battle

Mikel Arteta reportedly sees Arsenal transfer target Lisandro Martinez playing at left-back rather than centre-back should he move to the Emirates.

The Gunners had an initial bid in the region of £30million rejected by Ajax before submitting an improved offer of £35million earlier this week, as reported by The Athletic. Ajax are hoping to hold out for a deal closer to £45million for the 24-year-old and Manchester United are rumoured to be in 'pole position' after preparing a new bid for Martinez, according to reports.

Martinez's versatile nature allows him to play at both centre-back and left-back, making him an appealing player for many top sides. Reports suggest that the Argentine defender prefers a move to Old Trafford which would see him play under former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag once again, with the Dutch manager seeing him more as a centre-back.

The report from The Athletic suggests personal terms would not be an issue between the 24-year-old and the Gunners, and it would only be down to the player's personal preference as to which club he moves to. Neither United or Arsenal are yet to meet Ajax's £43million asking price with the rivals locked in a bidding war for the Argentina international.

Whilst Ten Hag sees Martinez operating as a centre-back, Arteta wants to utilise the 24-year-old at left-back. This is due to Martinez's ability on the ball and his physical stature, with the Argentine standing at 5ft 9ins tall, which could be considered too small for a Premier League centre-back.

The Gunners are still pushing for Martinez's signature as he is considered a priority defensive target for the north Londoners. Meanwhile, Arsenal are expected to confirm the signing of Gabriel Jesus in the coming days after the club agreed a £45million deal to sign the Manchester City forward, with the Brazilian set to be reunited with Arteta at the Emirates.
