Mikel Arteta proven right over Arsenal turnaround after David Dein stance emerges

The Kroenke family's ownership has long been a topic of debate at Arsenal.

American billionaire Stan Kroenke became a majority shareholder at the club in 2011 but did not seize sole control until 2018. However, Kroenke and his son, Josh, have not been popular custodians since they took charge at the Emirates.

Arsenal's powers have significantly waned over the past decade - so much so that the Londoners have even slipped outside the Premier League's elite in recent years.

Understandably, the Kroenke family has borne the brunt of fans' frustrations across that period. But despite criticism over the club's ambition under Kroenke, Mikel Arteta has been backed with significant funds over the past 12 months, while his appointment back in 2019 has helped Arsenal bridge the gap between the other teams at the summit of the Premier League.

While fans have not been shy in voicing their opinions on Kroenke, Arteta has made his own stance clear. After he was given the green light to spend over £100million for the second consecutive summer, the Spaniard insisted that the Kroenke ownership was one of the best around last month. He said: "I think the commitment and desire of this ownership is without a question or doubt as good as I've seen in football.

"They're on it, they want to take this club to a completely different level. They have the ambition, and it's clear, there is so much evidence that they're giving us all the support we need in order to do that.

"So it's great to see as well that now there is a little bit of change in that talk and even our supporters and everybody around the world is talking very differently about what is happening here."

At the time, Arteta's endorsement was met with scepticism, but the former Arsenal midfielder's verdict has now been backed by David Dein - the man who was at the helm during the most successful period in the club's recent history.

Dein was the vice-chairman who was responsible for hiring Arsene Wenger, who is now widely acknowledged as one of, if not the club's greatest ever managers.

Despite his influential role at the club, and his impressive working relationship with Wenger, Dein was forced out of the club back in 2007 - shortly before he sold Arsenal shares to Kroenke.

And the 79-year-old is adamant that Arteta is right and that the club's owners have learnt from mistakes that have been made since his own departure and are moving in the right direction.

"They made mistakes, no doubt," Dein told The Guardian while promoting his new book. "Bad mistakes over the years in the transfer market, and how they've run the club. But the good news is that it's 15 years since I left, and they now appear to be on an upward trajectory. The ship has been stabilised."
