Mikel Arteta praise prompts Arsenal tactical gamble talk for Man City test

Mikel Arteta has guided Arsenal to the top of the Premier League by sticking to his guns.

But, ahead of their biggest game of the season at home to title rivals Manchester City on Wednesday, the temptation to twist will be greater than ever.

City narrowed the gap at the top to three points yesterday, beating Aston Villa 3-1 to capitalise on Arsenal drawing 1-1 with Brentford on Saturday.

If Pep Guardiola's side win at Emirates Stadium, they will go ahead of Arsenal for the first time since the second week of the season.

For the first time this season, the Gunners are wobbling.

They have dropped points in back-to-back games and Arteta could be tempted to shuffle his pack to freshen up the team.

Arsenal were unchanged for the sixth game in a row against Brentford and Arteta has made just 14 changes to his starting XI all season, the fewest of any Premier League manager.

Knocking on the door loudest and pushing to come into the team is Leandro Trossard, who opened the scoring on Saturday four minutes after coming off the bench.

The £26million January signing has impressed since joining from Brighton.

Trossard excelled as a substitute against Manchester United to help Arsenal win 3-2 on his debut and was also one of the few bright sparks in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat by City last month.

Arteta is mulling over whether to start him ahead of Gabriel Martinelli on Wednesday.

"Straight away when he came you could see his quality," said midfielder Granit Xhaka of Trossard. "He has showed that he can change a game. I am so happy for him that he scored and hopefully there is more of that."

Arteta has been impressed by Trossard too, praising his "courage" on the ball and his knack for being in the right place at the right time

"He's got a smell for where the ball is going to land," said Arteta, after Trossard tucked in Bukayo Saka's cross at the back post at Emirates Stadium.

His goal was one of the few times Arsenal opened up Brentford, who equalised eight minutes later through a controversial Ivan Toney goal that PGMOL, the match officials' organisation, later revealed VAR should have ruled out for offside.

Arteta will be frustrated by that decision, but equally he will be agitated by the way teams are managing to stifle Arsenal's attack. Sides now have a blueprint of how to stop the Gunners — double up on their wingers, cramp Martin Odegaard of space in midfield and stop Thomas Partey getting the ball off their centre-backs.

It is easier said than done but, after Newcastle did it to draw at Emirates Stadium last month, Everton and Brentford have managed it too.

The introduction of Trossard into the team can spark Arsenal, while it would also offer their opponents something else to think about.

Martinelli has struggled in recent weeks, perhaps tired after the World Cup and also struggling in the absence of Gabriel Jesus, who he has such a good understanding with. That has left the door open for Trossard and the Belgian will feel his performances off the bench warrant a start on Wednesday. Arteta's reluctance to rotate is in contrast with Guardiola, who is renowned for his tinkering.

It is always difficult to predict a City XI and that will especially be the case on Wednesday, with concerns over the fitness of Erling Haaland after his injury scare yesterday. The City striker was forced off with a thigh issue and was being assessed today.

Predicting what Guardiola will do with his team has been dubbed 'Pep Roulette', but more often than not City come out as winners.

Now it is time to see if Arteta is ready to gamble.
