Mikel Arteta hints at agreement with Emile Smith Rowe over best of his "four positions"

Mikel Arteta appears to have finally settled on a role for Arsenal academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe after dropping a huge hint in the pre-season victory over Nurnberg.

So far throughout his career at the Emirates Stadium, the 21-year-old has been tasked with playing in many different positions. Whilst he has operated centrally on a number of occasions, he has also been required to take up a place on each flank, as well as up front.

Interestingly enough, Gunners boss Arteta has regularly highlighted Smith Rowe’s ability to slot in where required. Speaking in February, he said: "I think Smith Rowe can play in four positions.

"He can play as a left-winger, he can play as a left attacking midfielder, right attacking midfielder and he can play as a 9; very, very well I think."

However, Smith Rowe has signalled his preference to assume the creative midfield berth at the Emirates in the past - a position that saw him thrive last term as he racked up 10 Premier League goals.

On his position, he said: "I see myself as a No. 10, on the inside." He added: "But at the same time, because of the way we play at Arsenal, if I am on the wing, then the manager is telling me to drift inside and be natural like a No. 10 anyway."

It appears Arteta shares Smith Rowe's view on his best position, if Arsenal's pre-season excursions are anything to go by. During the clash with German side Nurnberg on Friday evening, the midfielder was once again deployed at No. 10 at the start of the match.

He was flanked by Reiss Nelson and Nicolas Pepe - both naturally wide players - with Eddie Nketiah leading the Arsenal line. Smith Rowe lasted 45 minutes of the tie before being replaced by summer signing Gabriel Jesus at half-time.

The Brazilian enjoyed a quick start to life as a Gunner, scoring twice to help Arteta’s men earn a thoroughly-entertaining 5-3 victory.

Of course, questions will remain over Smith Rowe’s long-term position in the side as the club’s preparations for next season continue. Regular No. 10 Martin Odegaard is yet to return following his international commitments during the summer.

The former Real Madrid man was preferred by Arteta last term, scoring seven goals and notching five assists in all competitions. The Norwegian will no doubt be keen to continue making an impression in North London, with the club adding more options in the heart of midfield.

Fabio Vieira has already been signed from Portuguese giants Porto, whilst the Gunners are continuing to pursue Leicester star Youri Tielemans.
