Mikel Arteta handed £12m chance to reignite Arsenal interest for dream Bayern Munich transfer

Arsenal could turn their attention to an old midfield transfer target in order to solve Mikel Arteta’s issues in the middle of the park. Marcel Sabitzer is reportedly no longer needed at Bayern Munich, and he would still be an excellent signing for the Gunners.

According to German news outlet Sport1, Bayern Munich would at least consider selling Sabitzer this summer if they receive an offer of around £12.4m. This is an absolute steal when you take into consideration the pedigree of the player.

The Gunners must sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window due to shortages and a lack of quality in the position. Sabitzer was linked to the club in the past, and Edu should look once again to complete a deal if the midfielder is available.

According to reports in Germany, the Gunners were keen on the Austria international in the summer transfer window as he entered the final year of his RB Leipzig contract. However, the midfielder decided to join Bayern Munich instead.

He left RB Leipzig having played 229 games for the club and scoring 52 goals and providing 42 assists. His exploits during his time with the Bundesliga side made him a desirable signing.

But he hasn’t had the same fortunes since his move to Bayern in the summer, as he has largely been played out of position, and primarily used as a substitute, hence the reason he has only scored one league goal this season.

A summer move to Arsenal for the midfielder certainly shouldn’t be out of the question. Last year, speaking in an interview with SportBILD, the 27-year-old hinted that he would be open to sealing a switch to England one day.

"I'm doing very well financially here, too. It's not my motivation to move there and build a money bin," Sabitzer said back in April 2020. "I like playing for RB.

"But I have played in England a couple of times, with the national team as well, and the atmosphere inspired me. The way the fans read the game and cheer shows that they understand football.

"A tackle is sometimes cheered, as is a diagonal ball. I like watching the Premier League, and I can imagine that it's fun to play there."

Arsenal could be left short in midfield this summer, with football.london understanding that Roma are expected to make a fresh attempt to sign Granit Xhaka at the end of the season.

This will mean that Thomas Partey would be the only experienced midfielder in the team. Mohamed Elneny’s contract is set to expire in June and Albert Sambi Lokonga still needs time to mature.

Sabitzer would be an excellent signing by Arsenal and it is a deal they should be pursuing. The Gunners will need strengthening in the midfield position, and the Bayern man would be an ideal candidate judging by the types of midfielders that Edu has been targeting ahead of next season, and the fact that he is available for such a bargain.
