Mikel Arteta given boost ahead of Wolves clash as forgotten man set to return to Arsenal squad

After being decimated by Covid-19, injuries, suspensions and AFCON absences in January, Arsenal's squad is finally getting back to full strength ahead of their Premier League return against Wolves on Thursday.

Some would argue that with the loan moves for Pablo Mari, Flo Balogun and Ainsley Maitland-Niles combined with the permanent departures of Calum Chambers, Sead Kolasinac and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that were sanctioned in the January transfer window, the Gunners are actually in a weaker position than when the month began..

When it comes to numbers though they are pretty much back at their full compliment.

Nicolas Pepe joined up with the Gunners for their midseason trip to Dubai after being knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, but there is still one player yet to return.

Mohamed Elneny has been away for a month after helping Egypt reach the final of AFCON. However, his journey ultimately ended in heartbreak as the Pharoahs were defeated on penalties by Sadio Mane's Senegal side.

While he was pictured in tears at the end of the game, Arteta will be hoping he can overcome his disappointment quickly to help Arsenal for the remainder of the season.

Midfield has been a problem position for the Gunners in January.

Things started off poorly when Granit Xhaka tested positive for Covid-19 meaning that inexperienced duo Albert Sambi Lokonga and Charlie Patino were forced to start alongside each other in the FA Cup third round defeat to Nottingham Forest.

It did appear that this would be a short-term problem though as Xhaka returned for the Carabao Cup semi final first leg against Liverpool, only to get himself sent off, ruling him out for two matches after his red card earlier in the season for the 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.

As a result of this Edu began to push quickly to try and secure a loan for Juventus' Arthur Melo until the end of the season, but the Serie A side's desire to have the move be an 18-month switch instead of a six-month one meant that it couldn't go ahead.

Arsenal then appeared to have been handed another lifeline when Thomas Partey returned earlier than expected following Ghana's unexpected elimination from the AFCON group stages.

The 28-year-old arrived in London on the day of the second leg with Liverpool and almost stepped immediately off the plane onto the Gunners' bench for the match.

However, he was then sent off himself for two yellow cards in the space of just three minutes, meaning that for the Premier League clash against Burnley Martin Odegaard was forced to drop into a deeper role where he received some support from the visibly unfit Emile Smith Rowe.

Now though with Xhaka, Partey and Elneny all set to be available for Thursday night's clash at Mollineux it appears that a position of weakness has quickly transformed into one of strength for the Gunners.

There had been some suggestions that Jack Wilshere - who has been training with the group at London Colney since October - could be signed on a short-term pay as you play deal to help bolster numbers until the end of the season, but football.london understands that he is hopeful of securing himself a permanent move elsewhere very soon after Arteta's decision not to offer him a contract.

Instead it looks as though Arsenal will continue with the first choice pairing of Partey and Xhaka that performed so well for them throughout their winning run in December.

Next in the pecking order will be Sambi Lokonga with Elneny providing an extra option, and highly rated Hale Ender Patino available if needs be.

Arteta's side only have 17 games left of this season after being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions and failing to qualify for Europe for the first time in a quarter of a century.

It is thought that for this period what they have will be enough, and with Elneny set to leave when his contract expires in the summer and Maitland-Niles unlikely to return at the end of his loan spell at Roma, it is likely that they will then look to bring in a new midfielder in the summer, with Youri Tielemans of Leicester and Renato Sanches of Lille among the names to have been linked.
