Arsenal boss and former Rangers midfielder Mikel Arteta has hinted that he could bring in a superstar in the January transfer window to help their Premier League title push amid links to Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhaylo Mudryk.
The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League having occupied first place since the end of August, with Manchester City their only genuine title contenders at present. The north London outfit have not finished in the top four since 2015-16, let alone win the league - but that eventuality is looking more and more promising with each passing game week.
In a bid to stay ahead of City's star-studded side and squad depth, reinforcements may look to be recruited in the winter window to give Arteta's squad a new found fire and invigoration. Most importantly, a chance to show that they deserve to sit at the top of the table would give their transfer targets a reason to move with potential silverware on offer. But whilst Arteta admits that the window can be cruel when searching for the perfect player, he noted that there won't be a bigger opportunity to attract the world's best.
And that could see Mudryk - who tore Celtic to shreds in the Champions League with two superbly-taken goals across two legs - move to the Emirates if they can agree a fee with Shakhtar Donetsk for the wing wizard, with interest reported via the Evening Standard.
Arteta said: “The planning of that period is extremely difficult. First of all because we know the January window, how special it is, the opportunities that you have, the short window that you have.
“Once you get the player they are straight away competing, so there is not an adaptation process. And obviously with the position that we are in right now as well, it demands as well another level of player — and that player has to be available. We will look at everything and let’s see what we can do.”
