Mikel Arteta could make surprise Calum Chambers call after what happened in Arsenal training

Calum Chambers' return to Arsenal training can help solve a major problem against Burnley.

The defender missed Thursday night's Carabao Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Liverpool with a neck problem, thus making him doubtful for Sunday's Premier League clash.

And with Cedric Soares also absent it meant Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had to take a gamble with Takehiro Tomiyasu against the Reds, despite the Japan international having no training sessions in the build-up to the game.

Speaking after the game, the Spaniard admitted that he didn't want to have to call upon the 23-year-old, but was effectively left with no other choice with no natural right-footed full-back available for selection.

"Well, he’s done incredibly. We didn’t want to play him, we had to push him because Cedric and Callum were out and we didn’t have any full backs," Arteta revealed. "The moment that he knew that he knew that he said that he would play.

"He didn’t have any training sessions with us, and still was willing play and compete the way he has done today.

"So I am extremely proud and grateful for the players that we have."

Ultimately that decision backfired as a lack of fitness worked against Tomiyasu as he was largely at fault for Diogo Jota's opener and generally struggled thereafter.

With that said, there is some good news on the full-back front.

As Chambers was spotted in Saturday's training session at London Colney and Tomiyasu wasn't, the former's potential availability means he could fill in at right-back and allow the latter to earn a rest against the Clarets.

If Chambers does start, it would be somewhat of a surprise call from Arteta as the 27-year-old hasn't started a Premier League game since that 5-0 thrashing away at Manchester City all the way back in August.

In fact, that was the last time the three-time capped England international started a game across any competition, with his two appearances since coming as a substitute.

Although, he did impress against Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg and just might be brought back in from the cold at the perfect time.
