Arsenal lost their first match of the season having come up short at Old Trafford. Manchester United came away as 3-1 victors but there were a number of decisions that went against the Gunners.
Gabriel Martinelli looked to have opened the scoring in the first half. However, Martin Odegaard was deemed to have fouled Christian Eriksen in the build-up and Arsenal’s goal was chalked off.
Mikel Arteta was not happy with the consistency of decision-making of officials. Striking a frustrated figure in the post-match press conference he gave prior examples where soft challenges had been made on Arsenal’s players, not given and cost the side.

“I haven’t seen the action but what they said is that it was a soft foul so it’s just consistency. The soft foul on Bukayo Saka with Mings is not a penalty last week, the soft foul against Aaron Ramsdale when we concede a goal against Villa, it’s a goal.
“So just consistency. There’s nothing we can do now, it’s too late, but it’s just consistency.”
Arteta’s words were backed up by his captain. Martin Odegaard told Sky Sports it was: “Never a foul.”
The Arsenal fans made their frustrations known by chanting, “Paul Tierney, he’s one of our own.” Tierney took an exceptionally long time to assess the challenge, trying to work out whether it was a clear and obvious error on his part to allow the game to play on.
Arsenal will need to put this defeat aside and use the games against Zurich and Everton to turn the form back in their favour with a couple of tough fixtures against PSV and away to Brentford. Doing so would see the Gunners winning seven of a possible eight and a very healthy record to look back on proudly.
