Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal atmosphere has never been better after Liverpool win: ‘Never seen it like this’

Mikel Arteta believes the Emirates atmosphere is better now than at any point since Arsenal left Highbury in 2006.

The Gunners have won every match at home this season, a run that was maintained with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool in a thrilling encounter in north London.

Twice Jurgen Klopp’s side pegged the Gunners back, with Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka having goals cancelled out by Darwin Nunez and then Roberto Firmino, but Saka put away a penalty with 15 minutes remaining to send Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League.

Even conceding those two goals did little to quieten the Emirates crowd, once again in raucous mood after wins at home over Tottenham and Liverpool in the space of eight days.

The Arsenal boss hailed the support his side are receiving, emphasising how much of an impact it was having on the players.

“I’ve never seen it like this,” Arteta told reporters after the match.

“You cannot imagine how much it helps the players and how much it gives them. One of the nicest things we’ve done since we are together here is to unite everybody and make them feel like when you go are you going to experience something together.”

Arteta celebrated wildly at the final whistle, recognising how significant a win it was for the Gunners even if Liverpool continue to fall short of the standards they have set in recent seasons.

The manner of the victory, having to twice deal with setbacks, made it even more pleasing for the Arsenal boss.

“That’s when the feeling of winning is so powerful and meaningful today because I see a team I can identify with and the feeling that they stick to what they have to do,” Arteta said.

“And at the same time they have the courage to just go for it, and attack them and put them under pressure.”
