Mikel Arteta believes Alexandre Lacazette wants to stay at Arsenal after Wolves heroics

Mikel Arteta saluted last gasp hero Alexandre Lacazette - and believes the Arsenal No9 wants to stay.

Gunners captain Lacazette, who is out of contract in the summer, saw his shot deflected in off Wolves keeper Jose Sa in the 96th minute as Arsenal took a huge step towards a Champions League place.

Arsenal boss Arteta said: “We don't know what's going to happen at the end of the season. We don't have contracts that run for 20 years, it's part of our job. He behaves like someone who wants to stay with us.

“It was an important win for us. The way we won it creates such a belief and togetherness and an atmosphere and cohesion with our fans as well and that’s extremely necessary. This is a really young squad and we need that.

“I told the players at half time, it is in these games and if you can come back which will decide if you can finish on top in May.”

Arsenal and Wolves were caught up in a war of words after their clash at Molineux when Ruben Neves accused Arteta’s men of celebrating like they had won the league.

But after such a dramatic turnaround as Nicolas Pepe levelled in the 82nd minute before Lacazette’s late intervention, the Emirates went wild.

“I encouraged them to celebrate every victory, you know how difficult every victory is in this league and for the supporters too,” Arteta said

Lacazette added: “I feel really happy, it is amazing to win this kind of game in the last minute. We really wanted this win because we know it is important to be at the top of the table.”

Meanwhile, Wolves boss Bruno Lage said: “I'm unhappy because we lost but at the same time proud of my players. They did everything I asked of them.”
