Mikel Arteta and Edu told to make January transfers amid Arsenal squad depth concerns

The big question on the lips of every Arsenal fan at the moment is if they can maintain their impressive start to the season. The Gunners put together five straight wins at the start of the campaign, before losing to Manchester United last time out, but they still sit top of the table after six matches.

The defeat at Old Trafford suggests that a failure to beat the teams around them could prevent Arsenal from being one of the title challengers. Last season, the Gunners picked up just nine points from a possible 30 against the other sides in the so-called 'big six'.

However, another concern for Arsenal is their lack of depth in certain positions, and former Gunners defender Mikael Silvestre believes it could be a major problem.

Mikel Arteta has been able to pick a pretty consistent side from game to game so far this season, but do Arsenal have the depth if the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard pick up injuries?

Midfield is an area where Arsenal do look light following the injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohammed Elneny, hence the desperate deadline day attempts to sign Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

The Gunners will play nine games in October and the number of games they could be playing after the World Cup break due to FA Cup and Europa League commitments is a particular concern for Silvestre.

"It (Arsenal's squad depth) might be okay up until the World Cup," Silvestre told bettingexpert.

"The World Cup is a good break but after that, you have a series of games for Christmas and New Year. From the beginning, I’ve noticed that Arsenal might be a bit short in some positions, especially in midfield and the attack.

"So, it’s gonna be a big test for the entire squad, rotation. It could become a concern in March and April when the bodies are getting tired."
