Mike White — yes, that Mike White — has a chance to become a New York legend this weekend

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Charles Curtis is filling in for Andy Nesbitt.

Oh, you think I’m exaggerating here? That one amazing Mike White game for the New York Jets will suddenly mean that he’s the QB of the future for a constantly downtrodden franchise, one they’ve been looking for … forever?

No.

But I’m a native New Yorker who still lives in the city. I talk to Jets fans all the time, and let me tell you: When White came in and threw three touchdowns against the Chicago Bears, it was electrifying.

Die-hards were clearly done with Zach Wilson and rightfully so — who knows if they’ll ever embrace the 2021 No. 2 overall pick again unless he turns his game and approach around? And maybe next year, they’ll be rooting for a veteran who comes in and thrives with a great crew of wideouts to match their menacing defense.

But let’s stay in the present. The Jets are 7-4 and very much in the playoff hunt. They’re facing a 9-2 Minnesota Vikings team that has some holes defensively.

Can you imagine what it’ll mean to the fanbase if White repeats what he did last week? I can. White will become a folk hero around here, the guy who kept the Jets in their playoff hunt by taking down one of the NFC’s best teams.

Jets fans need all the hope they can get, and White might be the one to provide it.

Some really good teams are out of the World Cup.

LeBron James’ whataboutism with Jerry Jones and Kyrie Irving completely misses the mark, writes our Mike Sykes.

— Hey, the Texans can still make the playoffs! Let’s explain how.
